A Chapbook for Fathers' Day
by Cliff Roberts

A Couplet

You birthed me from Night's dark womb
And made your heart my immortal tomb.

A Tanka

with your bloody kiss
you bought me into this world
with hopes to mold me

then I tried to run away
but your love caught up with me

An Acrostic

Forever is not eternity
As we would believe,
This moment is forever.
Hear the beating of two hearts?
Each slow rhythm a
Reflection of the other's love.

Day & Night

If only we could be the beauty
of this star filled night

But you are as compelling as the sun
and just as certain — my destruction

Like the celestial orb you allow
no deviation from course, no freedom

Each time you reach out to me
I hide from your embrace as if it were a solar flare

You made me a night creature
yet you burn too bright in your passion
So I must forever seek shade from you
lest you consume me entirely

Incinerating my heart
with but a touch.

the night is too short
for it to be spent in this chase
too few hours for me
to be running from you
if only you could leave me alone
stop your stalking
maybe you would find me
running full circle
coming up from behind
and chasing you
